Team work!

30 Oct 2019

When disaster strikes the importance of teamwork and the strength of the community and friendships really shine through.

Jane King recently attended a freak accident where poor Summer, a lovely bay mare ended up trapped in a ditch. She was hacking out along a road that she has ridden for the past 30 years, when the edge of the roadside ditch suddenly gave way. Summer's back end slipped with it, and, as much as she tried to save herself it was impossible and she slipped down into the water… with her rider still on board.

Her rider’s leg was trapped and Summer was stuck in rising water with her rider struggling to keep her head up. Eventually her rider got her leg out and was able to lodge herself in a position where she could hold Summer’s head on her legs to keep her head out of the water.

Luckily they were hacking with two friends who were able to get help quickly.

The Fire Brigade, Vet, local farmers (her brother!) and friends were all on the scene very quickly and the rescue operation commenced. It was a lengthy rescue carried out with Summer’s welfare at the heart of every decision.

Remarkably both Summer and her owner / rider walked away from this incident without a mark on them which is amazing!

I just wanted to say a huge thanks for quick response in getting to Summer who was on her side in a ditch. Jane King attended the incident and she was fantastic. She communicated well with Lancashire Fire & Rescue as well as myself.
Jane ensured Summer’s welfare was the priority as well as the safety of the Rescue team. To the credit of both Jane King and Lancashire Fire & Rescue Team both Summer and I walked away unscathed. Summer hasn’t a mark on her which is remarkable when you see the photos attached.
Thanks again!

Summer and her owner are back out riding and jumping again…. Fabulous news!
